WRCF 2024 Final Report - in-studio images of experiments and material research for Empty Bodies: Weaponized Absence
I have been thinking about the methodology of “scarecrow” and what that means in a sculptural context. Thinking about scarecrow as an imprint of a body, and how a body interacts with the build environment. I have been exploring poetic images and materials that relate to this through contact with the body and the body’s trappings. Coat hooks, flooring materials, remnants of furniture reassembled in an ah-hoc way, etc. I am quite pleased with how these pieces have progressed. I have been experimenting with different finishes and aging techniques as well. Using different combinations of rust, concrete dust, plaster, and other found materials.
I have also included a few images of the drawings I have been producing for this body of work as well. These are drawing from an archive of images of discarded children’s accessories that I have been photographing on the street. I am still not resolved as to how these will interact with the sculptural elements, but the direction is interesting to me and I think there are links between the discarded objects and the methodology of “scarecrow”. I have been using a wonderful new-to-me kind of paper from St-Armand paper called “Canal Paper” which has been a joy to explore. The two toned paper drawings are using this paper, and I will be using this a lot more in the future.
